Link’s Awakening is a special chapter in the The Legend of Zelda series, and the very first entry released on a handheld console, the legendary Game Boy, in 1993.
It all begins with a memorable intro: Link is caught in a violent storm at sea, and his ship capsizes. When he awakens, he finds himself washed up on the mysterious beach of Koholint Island. He is discovered unconscious by Marin, a kind-hearted girl who takes him home.
Upon waking, a strange confusion sets in: seeing Marin, Link momentarily believes she is Zelda. But the young woman immediately corrects him: her name is Marin, and he must forget everything else for now. Soon after, Tarin, Marin’s father, gives Link back his shield… and so begins a unique and enchanting adventure.
Very soon, Link meets a mysterious owl who reveals a secret: to return to Hyrule, he must awaken the Wind Fish, a legendary being. To do so, he must gather eight magical instruments hidden in the island’s dungeons.
However, one question remains throughout the journey: is this island real… or just a dream?
With its dreamlike atmosphere, captivating story, and perfectly tuned gameplay for the Game Boy, Link’s Awakening remains one of the most poetic and memorable Zelda entries. It was even remade beautifully for the Nintendo Switch in 2019, confirming its legendary status.
