In 1989, Nintendo released the very first Game & Watch: Zelda, a dual-screen game in the Crystal Screen line, inspired by Link's adventures. This model, now extremely rare, featured an original quest across multiple levels where Link fought monsters and recovered the Triforce. For its time, it was a gameplay feat on such a compact device.
Today, this Game & Watch is a coveted collector’s item, marking Zelda’s first foray into standalone portable gaming.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo released a new Game & Watch in 2021 dedicated to the series. This retro mini-console mimics the iconic Game & Watch design, featuring a modern color screen and several classic games.
This special edition includes The Legend of Zelda (1986), Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1987), and Link's Awakening (1993, Game Boy). A bonus mini-game, Vermin, also offers a new version where Link hits moles with a hammer.
Blending nostalgic tribute and functional gameplay device, this Game & Watch is both a collector’s item and a fun way to rediscover Zelda’s early days. It delights longtime fans and new players alike.
